Image Format Converter

Turn a JPEG into a WebP, a PNG into a JPEG, or any combination the browser can genuinely encode. Your image is processed in this browser tab.

Convert an image

Drag an image here, or choose one

JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF, up to 25.00 MB.

Your image is processed in this browser tab. It is not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drag an image onto the box above, or choose one from your device.
  2. Pick the format you want. Celveri explains what that particular change costs before you commit to it.
  3. For JPEG or WebP, set the quality. PNG is lossless and has no quality setting.
  4. Select Convert image, then download the result.

What this tool does and does not do

It decodes your image and re-encodes it in the format you choose. The pixel dimensions stay the same; only the way those pixels are stored changes.

  • It is a real conversion. The file is re-encoded by the browser’s encoder, and the result is rejected if it does not come back as the format that was asked for. Nothing is renamed and passed off as converted.
  • Converting cannot restore quality. Going from JPEG to PNG gives you a bigger file with the same detail already lost. Going from PNG to JPEG discards detail permanently.
  • Output is JPEG, PNG or WebP — the formats a canvas can genuinely write. Input is wider: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, subject to what your browser can decode.
  • Transparency survives in PNG and WebP, and you are warned before JPEG would flatten it.
  • Limits. Files up to 25.00 MB, because everything runs in your browser’s memory.
  • Metadata is removed and animated files are reduced to their first frame.

Converting, compressing or resizing?

Convert when the format is the problem: a site that will not accept WebP, or a PNG where a JPEG would do. Use the Image Compressor when a file must come in under a specific size, and the Image Resizer when the pixel dimensions are what matter.

Common questions

Can I not just rename the file extension?
No. A file’s extension is only a label; the bytes inside are still in the original format. Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg produces a file that most software will refuse or display as broken. This tool decodes the image and re-encodes it with your browser’s encoder for the target format, which is a genuine conversion.
Why can I only convert to JPEG, PNG and WebP?
Those are the formats a browser canvas can genuinely write. Asked for AVIF, GIF or BMP, browsers quietly return a PNG instead of refusing, which would mean handing you a PNG with the wrong extension. Celveri checks what the encoder actually produced and rejects anything that does not match, so a format is only offered when this browser can really write it. Reading is wider: JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF can all be opened, as long as your browser supports them.
Which format should I convert to?
WebP is the usual answer for the web: smaller than both JPEG and PNG at similar quality, with transparency, and supported by every current browser. JPEG is the safest choice for photographs going somewhere old or fussy, such as a printing service or a government upload form. PNG is for screenshots, logos and line art, and for anything that must stay pixel-exact.
Will converting to PNG improve a blurry JPEG?
No, and nothing can. PNG stores every pixel exactly, but the pixels it stores are the ones JPEG already discarded detail from. You get a larger file containing the same flaws. The tool says so before you convert.
Is transparency kept?
Converting to PNG or WebP keeps it. Converting to JPEG cannot, because the format has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are filled with white and you are warned before it happens.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, and the download comes from the copy made in the tab. Celveri has no upload endpoint and no database. You can watch your browser’s network tools while you convert to confirm it.
